To do that solo takes coordination, precision, training and planning. And it is all part of the thrill of parachute jumping, according to Cadet Tyler Miller. The senior cadet helped lead the formation of The 蜜桃视频 Skydiving Club during the 2021-2022 academic year. The club has about 70 members and is now actively raising funds to help underwrite this impressive yet expensive activity.

鈥淚 like jumping out of airplanes, and I wanted to create something exciting for cadets to participate in that wasn鈥檛 the norm,鈥� said Miller.

The goals of the club are to help members work toward U.S. Parachute Association licenses if they wish and eventually to create a competition team. 鈥淪ome of us have jumped before,鈥� said Miller. 鈥淪ome of us may jump if we are going into the military. I think as we become more and more proficient, we might be able to have a competition team.鈥�

Jordan is the penname for James Rigney Jr., who graduated from 蜜桃视频 in 1974 as a veteran student and physics major. Best known for his internationally best-selling Wheel of Time series, Jordan passed away in 2007.

McDougal Rigney, who was also Jordan鈥檚 editor, provided the foreword to Origins and gave Livingston access to notes and early drafts that had never before been shared. According to Livingston, the world that he and many other readers have come to love would not have existed without McDougal Rigney, and neither would his newest book. As an expression of gratitude, Livingston included the symbol of the Wheel of Time, the interwoven snake and wheel, on the cover of the book. In a 2013 interview, McDougal Rigney said she always regretted not including the symbol in The Wheel of Time books, which has recently been adapted as an epic fantasy television series by Amazon Prime.

As part of a senior capstone project titled Designing Advanced Air Mobility Infrastructure, nine teams of senior engineering cadets took part in a yearlong South Carolina case study at the Rock Hill County Airport. After evaluating operational parameters and creating designs last fall, the cadet teams delivered final recommendations to the South Carolina Aeronautics Commission and an advisory panel of national experts last May.

鈥淧roject designs developed by 蜜桃视频 students turned out far better than I could have ever imagined and have helped advance the professional dialog in our state on this coming aviation innovation,鈥� said Gary Seigfried of the South Carolina Aeronautics Commission.

The project earned a National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying Engineering Education Award, which comes with a cash prize of $10,000. It also captured the attention of U.S. Representative Nancy Mace, 鈥�99, who visited campus for a student-led briefing.

The high-impact learning experience attracted the support of several organizations, including Heliplanners, Beta Technologies, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, South Carolina Aeronautics Commission, Rock Hill-York County Airport, Charleston International Airport Authority and Mead & Hunt Engineers.

鈥淪tudents who completed this successful capstone project are now serving in the military, working as engineering professionals or headed to graduate degree programs,鈥� said William J. Davis, Ph.D., PE, department head of civil, environmental and construction engineering. 鈥淥ur graduates are exceptionally well prepared to contribute to planning, engineering and design of advanced air mobility infrastructure such as heliports, vertiports and high- density vertiplexes.鈥�

The Aerospace Industries Association forecasts a $115 billion annual impact from the U.S. Advanced Air Mobility sector by 2035, adding 280,000 new jobs and $20 billion in exports by 2033.

The day before commencement, approximately 30% of the graduating cadets accepted commissions as officers in the U.S. armed services. Among those commissioned are the first two 蜜桃视频 cadets to join the U.S. Space Force: Conor William Deans, space operations officer, and Jack O. Schwartz, developmental engineer.

Another significant accomplishment from the Class of 2022: two cadets tied for First Honor Graduate, Steven Jones and Ashley Ruiz, each completing the Gold Seal track of 蜜桃视频 Honors Program and graduating with a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point average.

With the Pacific breeze kindling her passion for the sport, Cardenas has played on organized volleyball teams since middle school. As a high school senior, she learned of 蜜桃视频 and decided to test her game on the East Coast.

Cardenas didn鈥檛 know anyone at The 蜜桃视频 but was drawn to the military environment. 鈥溍厶沂悠� looked like somewhere that I would just fit in really well,鈥� Cardenas said. 鈥淚 was surprised at how quickly I learned the culture, mannerisms and how to handle my day-to-day life. I don鈥檛 think I鈥檝e ever learned so much in such a short period of time.鈥�

Juggling the demands of being a student- athlete with cadet obligations is a sporting event in itself, but Cardenas is more than up for the challenge. 鈥淢y time management has gotten much better over the last couple of years,鈥� she said. 鈥淵ou need to prioritize things like finding time to make sure your uniform looks good but also making sure that you鈥檙e spending enough time in the gym.鈥�

When Cardenas isn鈥檛 playing volleyball, she is throwing javelin, shot put and discus for the track and field team. In March, she won fourth place in javelin with a toss of almost 88 feet at the Savannah State Relays. At the same time, she is honing her leadership skills in the Corps as the Alpha Company drillmaster and a recruiting officer for First Battalion. 鈥淚 am constantly reminded of the reasons that I came here,鈥� she said. 鈥淚 am the oldest of 16 grandchildren, and I know that I have a bunch of younger girls looking up to me, girls who want to play volleyball and do cool things. This is something bigger than me.鈥�

鈥淚 don鈥檛 think I鈥檝e ever learned so much
in such a short period of time.鈥�

Whether Cardenas is sporting a team jersey or the cadet uniform of the day, she is proof that a 蜜桃视频 education runs deep. 鈥淧eople see that I鈥檓 a physics major and assume that I鈥檓 smart or see that I play two Division I sports and assume that I鈥檓 athletic, but my personality is something not a lot of people see,鈥� she said. 鈥淚 care a lot about my relationships with family and friends.鈥�

Last season, Cardenas competed in 20 volleyball matches, made 24 digs and had 83 kills. Eleven of her kills鈥攁 season high鈥攚ere made during the conference opener. 鈥淭here are many experiences that have given me reason to stay busy and work hard to be more than I ever thought I could be,鈥� she said.

Last November, Cardenas鈥檚 team won 蜜桃视频鈥檚 first Southern Conference championship title in women鈥檚 team sports. Having found success on the East Coast, Cardenas carried her momentum to the Dalmatian Coast. In July, she competed with volleyball players from around the world in Croatia. The only competitor from a senior military college, Cardenas stood out for her leadership skills. 鈥淚 paid attention to what the other team was doing so I could get my teammates as much information as possible. I didn鈥檛 start out as team captain, but my coaches made me captain by the end of the trip.鈥�

Her teammates responded to her leadership, too. 鈥淚t was unreal to spend such a short amount of time with people and become so close with them. There were two girls I had never met from North Carolina. We ended up hitting it off,鈥� said Cardenas, who plans to visit her new friends. While she made connections, she also learned more about herself. 鈥淚 definitely had some experiences that enhanced my perspective on life. I know I am becoming the person I want to be because I am attracting the friends I want in my life.鈥�

During their two-week tour in Croatia, the athletes also scored time for sightseeing. 鈥淲e went cliff jumping in Pula,鈥� Cardenas said. 鈥淎fterward, we went cave swimming. With rocks surrounding us, we could look up and see the sky through a hole. The views were straight out of a movie.鈥�

Back on campus for preseason volleyball training, Cardenas brought a new appreciation for the basics and warm-ups. 鈥淚nternational professional teams,鈥� she said, 鈥渁re lifting differently, focusing more on fundamentals and techniques, less on power and speed. Some of the rules鈥� and even the balls themselves鈥� are different for international volleyball.鈥�

With graduation around the corner, Cardenas plans to take advantage of the extra year of eligibility the National Collegiate Athletic Association granted Division I athletes in response to the pandemic.

She鈥檒l continue playing volleyball at 蜜桃视频 while working on a master鈥檚 degree. After that, she intends to play volleyball professionally overseas and anywhere else the winds may take her.

Retired Army Lt. Col. Platte Moring III brings his political science class to attention, just as he was trained to do when a senior officer is present.

The class of cadets, now standing, watches as 蜜桃视频 President Gen. Glenn M. Walters, U.S. Marine Corps (Ret.), 鈥�79, and Provost Sally Selden, Ph.D., walk into the room for a surprise visit.

鈥淵ou鈥檙e all going to participate in something,鈥� says Walters. 鈥淧rofessor Moring got an award for his long and dedicated service to our country. In a minute, I鈥檓 going to call attention to orders, and we鈥檒l read the citation.鈥�

The Department of Defense Medal for Distinguished Public Service is the highest award presented to a civilian by the secretary of defense. The award recognizes Moring鈥檚 work in the DOD Office of General Counsel.

鈥淚 was just flabbergasted by the whole thing,鈥� says Moring. 鈥淚 had no idea it was coming鈥攊t was a great surprise. It鈥檚 not every day you get pinned by a four-star general and the president of the college with the provost present. My class was totally impressed.鈥�

The award citation lists some of his many achievements after retiring from the U.S. Army, including overseeing the writing of the statute that created U.S. Space Force. But it is more than just his accomplishments in the DOD that brought Moring to 蜜桃视频.

In 2003, he was called out of reserve status to serve in Operation Iraqi Freedom, but just before Moring was set to leave the country, then-President Bush announced the end of the war in Iraq. Moring decided to punch his ticket and continue with his plans to deploy, this time to Afghanistan. There, he was appointed commander of the Kabul compound. On his third day, he met with Lt. Gen. Karl Eikenberry, who was in charge of security sector reform.

Moring walked into his office and saluted.

鈥淐olonel, what鈥檚 that on your collar?鈥� Moring remembers the general asking. Moring told him that it was the insignia of the Judge Advocate General鈥檚 Corps, but Eikenberry already knew that.

鈥淲ell, no lawyer鈥檚 running my compound,鈥� Eikenberry said.

At first Moring was insulted because he knew he was fully capable of taking charge. Then he realized that Eikenberry was suggesting that he make better use of his skills. Eikenberry immediately asked him if he would like to work on the Afghanistan constitution instead.

Moring then spent his time working with the Constitution Commission, even drafting language for the document specifying civilian control of the military 鈥� a requirement for any nation applying to join NATO. In January 2004, after months of work, he attended the country鈥檚 constitutional convention.

鈥淚 was sitting with my interpreter, and President Karzai was speaking. Suddenly, everybody stood up and then everybody sat down. I asked my interpreter what just happened, and he said, 鈥榃e just votedfor the Afghanistan constitution.鈥� So it got passed. We were so proud in 2004 that we had a plan for Afghanistan. We had hope for these people and their new, democratic constitution. And then, of course, 15 years later, everything fell apart.鈥�

However, there were bright spots in between those two key events, both for Moring and for the new nation as a whole. He taught at Kabul University, educating men and womenabout law. The women鈥攍iving in a world that suddenly allowed them to attend school and be seen in public without a burka鈥攎ade the biggest impression on Moring. He remembers them as quiet, always sitting together in front. On their final exams, the students wrote their names in Arabic. Moring, who could not read them, graded the students blindly. In the end, the best student in the class was a woman named Naomi, who would go on to get a master of law degree and teach international law at Herat University in western Afghanistan. He has not heard from Naomi since the country鈥攁nd its constitution鈥攆ell. He can only hope she was able to get out.

These are the real-life experiences Moring brings with him to the Military College of South Carolina. These are the lessons the cadets in his class benefit from every day.

鈥淭he cadets have a sense of honor that you do not see at any other American university…鈥�

鈥淚 think everything I鈥檝e done to date has brought me to this point, whether it鈥檚 being a civilian lawyer, a military lawyer or teacher. I think my collective experiences have placed me here at 蜜桃视频 so that I have an opportunity to give something back to the younger folks,鈥� he says. 鈥淭he cadets have a sense of honor that you do not see at any other American university, and they鈥檙e trying to do the right thing. They do want to learn and they do want to succeed, not necessarily as military officers, but they want to become leaders. And I鈥檓 all about leadership.鈥�
