KEVIN M. MODGLIN, M.A., M.P.H.
Kevin M. Modglin is the Director of the Campus Alcohol and Drug Information (CADIC) at 蜜桃视频鈥擬ilitary College of South Carolina. 蜜桃视频 hired Kevin in 2014 to develop, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive alcohol, tobacco, and other drug (ATOD) misuse prevention program on campus. The result was the creation of C.A.D.I.C.鈥攁 unit within the Commandant鈥檚 Division. As a director within this division, Kevin reports directly to the Commandant of Cadets (i.e., Vice President of Student Affairs). Kevin is the youngest of ten siblings (I KNOW!). He grew up in Ventura, California a beautiful coastal city between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. He lived in Ventura until he graduated from high school whereupon he immediately relocated to the other coast: Jacksonville, Florida. While living in Jacksonville, he attended the University of North Florida where he received his Bachelor of Arts in psychology (1997), Master of Arts in psychology (2003), and Master of Public Health in community health (2007). He graduated in the top 5% in each degree program.
With over twenty-five years of experience in higher education (student affairs)鈥攕pecializing in alcohol, tobacco, and other drug misuse prevention鈥擪evin has worked with a variety of students (e.g., veterans, military, commuter, and 鈥榯raditional鈥) in various college settings (e.g., military college, urban college, and a 鈥渢raditional鈥 college). Additionally, he has worked with students that are often marginalized or underrepresented on college campuses including students with substance use disorders, students with mental health and wellness concerns, and LGBTIQ students.
At 蜜桃视频, Kevin provides one-on-one, small group, and online substance misuse prevention services and programs. When working with students, he emphasizes stages of change using brief motivational interviewing and harm-reduction strategies and follows the code of ethics for public health practitioners promulgated by the American Public Health Association (APHA).As an adjunct instructor, he teaches courses in ethics and leadership as well as courses in health and wellness. Similarly, he has facilitated workshops and seminars at national, state, and local conferences on topics such as stress management, LGBTIQ health issues, sexual health, suicide prevention, and substance abuse prevention.
Throughout his career in higher education, Kevin has been the recipient of several awards including (1) 鈥淏eyond the Call鈥 Employee Achievement Award, (2) Student Affairs Program of the Year Award, (3) Student Affairs Interdepartmental Collaboration Award, and (4) Best Social Marketing Message (for 0-0-1-3 drinking message). Additionally, he has twice received the Most Effective Assessment and Evaluation Award within the Division of Student Affairs.
Although he prefers to be addressed by his first name many cadets are more comfortable addressing him using the title of 鈥淢r.鈥濃攕o now he is (mostly) referred to as 鈥淢r. Kevin.鈥 Other titles include 鈥淢r. Modglin鈥, 鈥淢r. CADIC鈥, or the ubiquitous 鈥渟ir.鈥 And, since his office provides free condoms, he has been called 鈥淭he Condom Guy鈥 on more than one occasion. If you were to ask Kevin what he enjoys the most he would say: beach, books and music! He identifies himself as a 鈥渂ook nerd鈥 and enjoys both fiction (e.g., epic fantasy, science fiction) and nonfiction (e.g., philosophy, ethics). His music preferences include modern rock, classic rock, southern rock, 80s 鈥渘ew wave鈥 rock, classic country, traditional R&B, jazz, and classical music (Baroque Period)鈥nd the list goes on. If he is not reading, Kevin will be listening to music while lounging at the beach or on his patio, or while 鈥済rilling out鈥 with family, friends, or neighbors.
